Our Flyover State
I love Jason Aldean’s newest single “Flyover States”…mostly because we live in one. And we are incredibly lucky to be able to call Iowa home. Like most of the rest of you in Flyover States, we are happy to be only a blip on the map; happy to have small towns and cities with low crime rates; happy to have honesty and hard work to live by; happy to be here!

I used to work for a man who said to me once during a snow storm (actually, during my interview as well) “Kinda makes you wonder why we choose to live here when there is sunshine in Florida year round.” My answer to him was, “Because having blizzards in the winter and heat over 100 degrees in the summer weeds out all the wimps and whinny people!” Sometimes I speak before thinking…but the awesome guy hired me anyway. He was (is) a good man.
Anyway, our lives are busy here in our beloved Flyover State. We are getting ready for our fun roommates to move in for the summer. William will be here tomorrow. I’m excited to see his huge smile and listen to him jabber on about whatever has him heated up at that moment (he’s a very passionate fellow…even though I don’t always understand what he means). He makes the most delicious food and I have no complaints when the house smells of it.
Polo officially starts here in June for the Des Moines Polo Club, but the farm needs to be ‘woken up’ first (horses brought up, trimmed up and exercised, tack cleaned, barn swept for cobwebs, etc). Activity will soon be buzzing around us. I wish I were heading to the barn to help. The horses are already starting to feel fine in this mild spring weather.
Most importantly, JJ has been working like crazy on the tractor/sprayer/finisher/planter etc. He’s already pulled anhydrous and, as soon as it dries out from this last rain spell we had, he’ll be ready for the next step. Sometimes, he has a little help getting his work done…
And Evan is….well….just busy in general.
I’d love to hear from some of you others in Flyover States! Give me a shout out! There’s nothing so special as loving the land you call home. :-) *sigh* Okay…back to reality (at the moment, a grocery list). A fun recipe themed post coming soon.
